Langgam Pos - The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics is underway, with delegations parading on boats along the Seine River. For the first time in Summer Olympic history, the Opening Ceremony is not being held in a stadium. Paris 2024 has chosen the heart of the city, along its main waterway: the Seine River.
This unique ceremony took place early on Saturday, July 27, 2024. A total of 10,500 athletes boarded boats to traverse the 6-kilometer stretch of the Seine, starting with the Greek delegation.
Not all boats were filled by athletes from a single country. For example, Afghanistan, South Africa, Albania, Algeria, and Germany shared one boat.
The parade of boats was intermittently interrupted by musical performances. Lady Gaga was the first artist to perform, making a dramatic entrance from behind a pom-pom.
Following Lady Gaga’s performance, the parade of athletes on boats resumed. There was also a performance by children in pink costumes carrying torches along the Seine, which were handed over by Zinedine Zidane.
The torch was then passed to a man with a covered face who continued running across rooftops.
As rain began to fall, it was evident that even FIFA President Gianni Infantino had to don a raincoat. Despite the rain, the event continued without interruption.
Indonesia shared a boat with India and Iran. The Indonesian delegation consisted of 14 athletes and officials, including Chef de Mission (CdM) Anindya Bakrie, judo athlete Maryam March Maharani, who carried the main Red and White flag, cyclist Bernard Benjamin van Aert, and swimmers Azzahra Permatahani and Joe Aditya.
Shortly after, the parade of delegations was paused for a musical rendition of the French national anthem.
