The Hottest Places on Earth in 2024: Temperatures Soar to 70.7°C

Langgam Pos - Have you ever wondered about the highest recorded temperatures in history? Around the globe, there are numerous locations renowned for their extreme heat.

Here are the top 10 hottest places on Earth in 2024, based on rankings from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), as reported by y20 India on Sunday, July 28, 2024:

1. Death Valley, USA

On July 10, 1913, Death Valley in the United States recorded its highest temperature ever at 56.7°C. This place is increasingly popular for observing Earth's hottest temperatures and as a tourist destination. Notable features include "Bad Water," where salt coats the ground, and the unusual Single Moving Stones. The heat in Death Valley is so intense that eggs can cook directly on the ground. Visitors from Las Vegas often encounter this phenomenon, though the national park authorities discourage cooking eggs on the ground to avoid littering.

2. Kebili, Tunisia

On July 7, 1931, Kebili in Tunisia recorded the third-highest temperature ever at 55.0°C. Despite Africa's reputation for extreme heat, the WMO confirms this as the highest temperature on the continent, attributed to the Sahara Desert. This city, near the Algerian border, experiences harsh living conditions with summer temperatures surpassing 40°C and winter temperatures dropping below -5°C. Kebili also encompasses Lake Chott el Jerid, Tunisia's largest salt lake. The city, a historic crossroads, is among the hottest populated places in the world.

3. Mitriba, Kuwait

The third spot goes to Mitriba in Kuwait, where on July 21, 2016, temperatures reached 53.9°C. Located in northwestern Kuwait, Mitriba houses a climate observatory, making its data highly credible. As a result, this 53.9°C record is considered one of the highest ever recorded.

4. Turbat, Pakistan

Turbat, Pakistan, recorded a temperature of 53.7°C on May 28, 2017, placing it fourth. The WMO updated this record in 2019, previously listed as 54.0°C. Recent heatwaves have severely impacted Pakistan, especially Turbat, during Ramadan, a month when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. The extreme heat during this period poses significant challenges.

5. Ahvaz, Iran

The capital of Khuzestan Province, Ahvaz, Iran, known for its oil reserves and industrial significance, often experiences temperatures around 45°C. This area, part of the historically significant Persia, sees very little rainfall in summer, leading to dust and sand storms. The World Health Organization (WHO) labeled Ahvaz as the most polluted city in the world in 2011 due to extreme air pollution from oil field development.

6. Turpan, China

Turpan in Xinjiang Province, northwest China, is famous for its Buddhist monasteries surrounded by desert landscapes. Temperatures here occasionally exceed 50°C, and the area is known for its volcanic mountains and key trade routes.

7. Wadi Halfa, Sudan

Wadi Halfa in Sudan experiences temperatures of 52.8°C and is located in the strategic desert region of Sala. The area is difficult to access, with limited comfortable accommodation and transportation options.

8. Lut Desert, Iran

The Lut Desert in southeastern Iran is considered the hottest place on Earth, with surface temperatures exceeding 70.7°C. NASA's measurements have recorded these extreme temperatures. This region was ranked as one of the hottest places in 2004 and 2007, reaching peak temperatures in 2005.

9. Brazil

Brazil has faced record-high temperatures in several regions, attributed to global warming. Persistent heat, influenced by phenomena like El Niño, is causing temperatures to exceed six degrees Celsius above the average. This alarming trend threatens the environment, human health, and the economy, especially in agriculture.

10. Timbuktu, Mali

Timbuktu, Mali, near the Sahara Desert, features extensive sand dunes and records temperatures up to 54.4°C. The city's proximity to the desert enhances its historical significance and extreme heat.
