Four Natural Ways to Cleanse Your Kidneys at Home

Langgam Pos - The kidneys are a pair of small organs located just below the ribcage at the back. Despite their size, they play a crucial role in the human body. Their primary function is to filter toxins, waste, and metabolic byproducts from the blood, which are then expelled through urine. Additionally, the kidneys are essential in hormone production, red blood cell formation, and maintaining electrolyte balance.

When the kidneys become dirty or damaged, they cannot function optimally, increasing the risk of various health issues such as hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.

Fortunately, cleansing the kidneys is not difficult. Here are several natural ways to keep your kidneys clean that you can do at home.

1. Stay Hydrated

Every organ in the human body, including the kidneys, requires water to function properly. The body needs ample water to produce urine, which the kidneys use to expel waste from the body. Insufficient hydration can lead to reduced urine output, causing waste products to accumulate in the body. Dehydration is also a common trigger for various kidney problems, such as kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) recommends that adults drink between 2.7 and 3.7 liters of water daily.

2. Eat Kidney-Friendly Foods

Eating a balanced diet can prevent the buildup of cholesterol and fats that could damage blood vessels, including those in the kidneys. Healthy foods such as lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products can contribute to kidney health. Some foods, like cranberries, offer additional benefits. A 2019 study found that cranberries could improve kidney health by preventing inflammation, oxidative stress, and the risk of urinary tract infections.

Additionally, consuming foods high in calcium can help maintain kidney health. Calcium binds with oxalate, preventing its absorption by the body. High oxalate levels can increase the risk of kidney stones.

3. Drink Kidney-Cleansing Teas

A 2023 study found that certain types of tea could reduce the risk of kidney disease. Beneficial teas for the kidneys include green tea, black tea, sambong tea, and hydrangea tea.

4. Take Supplementary Vitamins

Sometimes, your daily diet may not provide all the necessary nutrients. To support kidney health, consider supplements that contain vitamin B6, omega-3 fatty acids, and potassium citrate. A deficiency in vitamin B6 can lead to the conversion of glyoxylate into oxalate, a compound that can cause kidney stones. Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent kidney stone formation, while potassium citrate helps balance the pH level in urine.
