Langgam Pos - McDonald's Instagram account was reportedly hacked on August 21, leading to a major scam involving a Solana-based meme coin. The hackers exploited the fast-food chain's social media account to promote a fake token named "Grimace," a reference to one of McDonald's fictional characters featured in its advertisements.
According to findings by Bubblemaps, the hackers managed to acquire 75% of the total supply of Grimace tokens using the Solana meme coin dispenser, pump.fun. The attackers utilized multiple addresses to purchase the tokens simultaneously and then distributed the accumulated supply across approximately 100 different wallets.
The hackers reportedly siphoned off more than $700,000 worth of Solana during the scheme, equivalent to around Rp 11 billion based on an exchange rate of Rp 15,751 per US dollar.
Screenshots from X revealed that McDonald's Instagram page was altered to endorse the token as a "McDonald’s experiment on Solana" and included a thank-you message to followers for their contributions, which hinted at the fraudulent activity.
In a statement to the New York Post, McDonald’s acknowledged the "isolated incident" affecting its social media account.
"We have resolved the issue with the account and apologize to our fans for any offensive language posted during that time," McDonald's stated, as quoted by Coinmarketcap on Friday, August 23, 2024.
This incident serves as a reminder for investors to be cautious with newly launched meme coins, as many of these highly volatile assets are susceptible to fraud. In the Solana ecosystem, pump.fun has emerged as a notable platform for meme coin creation.
