Langgampos.com - Vice President of Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, has called for the smooth and peaceful celebration of Christmas in 2024, urging authorities and communities not to obstruct or complicate the festivities.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 2024-2027 Central Board of Catholic Youth in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 17, Gibran emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe and joyous environment for all. The event was held at the Conference of Indonesian Bishops (KWI) building on Jalan Taman Cut Mutia, Menteng.
This commitment aligns with a directive from President Prabowo Subianto, Gibran noted. "The President has stressed the importance of preparing for Christmas and New Year celebrations. His primary emphasis is that all layers of society should be able to celebrate these occasions safely, joyfully, and comfortably," Gibran said.
Encouraging Direct Reporting
Gibran addressed Stefanus Gusma, the Chairman of the Catholic Youth Central Board, encouraging the reporting of any challenges encountered during the Christmas celebrations. He further urged the public to utilize the "Lapor Mas Wapres" platform for direct communication with his office.
"If there are any difficulties in conducting Christmas Masses or celebrations, report them immediately to the police, military, or local governments. You can also report directly to me," Gibran stated. "Through the 'Lapor Mas Wapres' channel, you can contact me via phone or WhatsApp."
A Track Record of Inclusivity
Gibran highlighted his longstanding commitment to religious harmony, which dates back to his tenure as Mayor of Solo. He recounted the challenges faced in organizing Christmas celebrations and installing decorations in the city, underscoring his dedication to fostering inclusivity.
"Over three years in Solo, the challenges were extraordinary," he said. "Putting up Christmas ornaments and trees was met with resistance. But what gave me courage was the support of open-minded young people who embraced diversity and respected differences."
Gibran's remarks reflect his steadfast commitment to ensuring freedom of worship and promoting mutual respect across religious and cultural lines.
A Stand Against Intolerance
The Vice President's statement comes at a time of heightened focus on national unity and tolerance. As Indonesia continues to navigate its diverse cultural and religious landscape, Gibran’s call serves as a reminder of the government’s responsibility to uphold religious freedoms.
Gibran’s proactive stance, coupled with the “Lapor Mas Wapres” platform, highlights his readiness to address issues promptly and personally, ensuring that Christmas 2024 is celebrated without hindrance.
"Let us work together to create a harmonious environment where everyone feels safe and respected," Gibran concluded.
This statement further solidifies his reputation as a leader committed to inclusivity and progress, even amidst recent political challenges.
