TikTok Limits Beauty Filters for Teens: What's Behind the Move?

Langgampos.com - TikTok has once again found itself in the spotlight with a bold new initiative. The popular social media platform is imposing restrictions on the use of beauty filters and appearance-altering effects for users under the age of 18.

This move is part of TikTok’s response to growing concerns about the impact of “filtered realities” on social media, particularly regarding teenagers' mental health.

While details remain unclear, this step is seen as an initial effort to mitigate the negative effects of filters on young users’ self-image. According to  Phone Arena on Sunday (December 1, 2024), TikTok is also mandating greater transparency in revealing how filters work and how they alter appearances.

New Guidelines for Creators

In addition to limiting filters for users, TikTok has updated its guidelines for creators in Effect House, the platform where filters are designed.

The company has stated that it will prioritize understanding how TikTok filters impact users. However, it is uncertain how significant these updates will be.

Cracking Down on Underage Accounts

TikTok is also stepping up efforts to detect and block accounts belonging to users under 13 years old. Using machine learning technology, the platform plans to flag accounts suspected of being managed by underage users for manual review by moderators.

Currently, TikTok claims to remove approximately six million accounts each month for violating age restrictions.

This initiative will first be implemented in the United Kingdom and is expected to expand globally in the coming months.

Facing Legal Scrutiny in the U.S.

TikTok is under legal pressure, facing lawsuits in 14 U.S. states over concerns about its impact on teenage mental health.

While these steps are commendable, TikTok must demonstrate that this initiative is more than just a public relations move. Genuine efforts are needed to provide meaningful protection for younger generations.
