Langgampos.com - Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has pledged support for President Prabowo Subianto's flagship program providing free nutritious meals in Indonesia. As part of this collaboration, Japan will offer training and send experts to assist in its implementation.
“To accommodate President Prabowo’s strong desire to provide highly nutritious school lunches for children in Indonesia, Japan will establish a comprehensive cooperation package,” PM Ishiba stated after a bilateral meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Bogor, West Java, on Saturday (January 11, 2025).
"This package includes training for school meal providers, sending experts, and providing support for enhancing the fisheries and agriculture sectors by leveraging Japan's extensive experience," he added.
Additionally, Ishiba noted that both countries had agreed to strengthen human resource exchanges and Japan’s support for Indonesia’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
“We have also agreed to deepen collaboration on the international stage, including Indonesia’s bid to become an OECD member,” Ishiba remarked.
The Japanese Prime Minister emphasized his commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation between the two nations. He extended an invitation to President Prabowo to attend the Osaka Kansai Japan Expo in 2025.
“I sincerely thank you for the warm welcome, and I look forward to hosting many Indonesian guests at the Osaka Kansai Japan Expo. I also extend my invitation to President Prabowo to visit Japan and look forward to welcoming him,” Ishiba said.
Earlier during the meeting, President Prabowo outlined his government’s key priorities for the next five years, including food self-sufficiency, energy independence, and industrialization.
“As Your Excellency may have observed, my administration has outlined critical priorities that we aim to achieve,” Prabowo said during the bilateral meeting.
“The first is food self-sufficiency. The second is energy self-sufficiency. The third is downstream processing and industrialization of our natural resources,” he explained.
Prabowo also highlighted his commitment to eradicating hunger in Indonesia, noting that a significant portion of the population still suffers from malnutrition.
“Fourth, we aim to eliminate hunger among the Indonesian people, as many still experience nutritional deficiencies,” he stated.
The President further expressed his administration’s focus on strengthening defense capabilities and welcomed Japan’s potential involvement in Indonesia’s future economic development.
“We are open to Japan’s participation in building Indonesia’s economy moving forward,” Prabowo concluded. (*)
